Step 1:
Go to the Online Handbook and for the course you are interested in take a note of
- the Fee Band (Student Contribution Band)
- the EFTSL value
Step 2:
Look up the student contribution rate in the table below.
UNSW Student Contribution Amounts 2007
UNSW has set the following Student Contribution amounts for Commonwealth supported students. (In 2007, all 'post-2005 students', including those who commenced a program of study on or after 1 January 2005, will pay student contributions at 125% of the indicative Commonwealth rate.)

For pre-2005 HECS students who began their program before 1 January 1997, the student contribution for 2007 is $3,001. The pre-1997 rate is indexed each year.
Step 3:
Take your calculator and multiply the EFTSL value by the student contribution rate for the course you are interested in.
For example the course ACCT1501 - Accounting and Financial Management 1A is in Student Contribution Band 2 ($7,118 for a student who is starting in 2007) and has an EFTSL value of 0.125. The student contribution charge for this course is: $7,118 x 0.125 = $889.75
To calculate your annual contribution you will have to follow these steps for each of the courses you intend to study this year. Your total annual contribution will be the total of each amount (but keep in mind eligible students who pay up-front receive a 20% discount).
Example
Ana commences a Bachelor of Commerce in 2007. In her first year she enrols in 5 Commerce courses (each 6 UOC) and 3 Arts courses (each 6 UOC), and thus undertakes a standard annual full-time workload of 48 units of credit.
Her 2007 student contribution amount will be calculated as follows:

Note: Student Contribution annual amounts are quoted above. Student Contributions are charged and are payable at the commencement of each semester. Failure to finalise payment or supply a Tax File Number may result in your enrolment being cancelled for that semester.
Fee-paying Students
Students in full-fee places (non-Commonwealth supported students) will be charged per course (unit of study) according to the schedule of tuition fees.
To calculate the cost of a unit of study (course):
Step 1:
Go to the Online Handbook and take a note of the unit of credit (UOC) value for the course.
Step 2:
Go to the schedule of tuition fees for the faculty relevant to the course you are interested in studying. To calculate the charge for a course, refer to the course prefix, the course classification and the student classification to determine the fee per unit of credit.
Step 3:
Take your calculator and multiply the fee per unit of credit by the UOC value for the course.
For example: In 2007 an international student is enrolling in a Faculty of Commerce and Economic course, ACCT3563, which has a value of 6 UOC and the course is classified as undergraduate. The fee for this course will be 6 x $410 = $2460.00.
To calculate your annual fee you will have to follow these steps for each of the courses you intend to study this year. Your total annual fee (payable before each semester) will be the total of these amounts.

Eligible undergraduate and postgraduate students (Australian citizens or holders of permanent humanitarian visas) will be able to borrow money from the Australian Government to pay for their tertiary studies through a scheme called FEE-HELP for which a 20% loan fee applies to undergraduate students.
