A Message from the Dean

For Undergraduate Students

FBE Dean

Welcome to the Faculty of the Built Environment (FBE) at the University of New South Wales – a research and learning environment with an exceptional range of programs on offer to provide a comprehensive understanding of the design, management and construction of sustainable cities.

At the FBE undergraduate study is structured around the disciplines of Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Interior Architecture, Industrial Design, Architectural Computing, Construction Management and Property. A flexible approach encourages interdisciplinary learning experiences without reducing focus on academic knowledge and skills required for professional practice. Graduates of the FBE are frequently acknowledged as leaders in the design professions as evidenced through industry recognition and peer assessment often in the form of awards within the professions.

Undergraduate programs are linked to related research activities focused through two established initiatives - City Futures and the Centre for Health Assets Australia (CHAA).
Research is integral to the FBE and is supported by government, UNSW and industry funding. The FBE is structured and positioned to provide comprehensive research into a broad range of contemporary and industry relevant built environment issues. Research is highly valued and encouraged across a broad range of interests.

Academic staff widely acknowledged as leaders in research, education and professional practice and the ‘Red Centre’ environment within the UNSW campus, provide the basis of the FBE student experience. International study activities as well as industry links to major initiatives affecting the built environment of the city of Sydney complement many study programs and often are the focus of the design studios.

The FBE at the UNSW is committed to developing in our graduates the new knowledge, skills and values required to achieve sustainable, well designed built environments. We invite you to explore in more detail your interests through the web site at www.fbe.unsw.edu.au or by directly contacting academic staff in your preferred program of study.
