Description

(Fully Online Postgraduate by Coursework Elective)

When did trade fairs evolve into innovative exhibition design? Why did ‘flagship stores’ replace the importance of shopping centres? When did chain hotels give way to boutique resorts? What are signature restaurants and concept stores?

The design of interiors, spaces or buildings relating to retail, hospitality and exhibition design has changed dramatically over the past 20 years.

The concept of the standard ‘in-house’ designer has been replaced with a hybrid mix of talent that embraces new concepts, strategies, technology and materials within the new global environment. This innovation has generated a series of iconic built and un-built projects, as well as the emergence of methodologies and work practices such as collaboration, interdisciplinary design, transarchitecture, celebrity designers and brand architecture.

In this fully online course you will gain an advanced understanding of the influences and catalysts that contributed to these changes by analysing a range of significant projects – and their designers – from around the world. You will debate the impact of issues such as context, globalisation, branding and obsolescence on these projects, as well as explore the role of advanced technology, communication and materials.

You will identify, visit and document relevant examples within your own city and environment. Students can then apply this knowledge by exploring concepts and ideas for creating these types of spaces in team environments.

The course aims to attract students worldwide, and across a variety of design disciplines and faculties. Group and individual assignments will cover theoretical and practical components, and the online activities will encourage interdisciplinary discussion and interaction amongst the students.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students will receive course website location and log in instructions via their UNSW email account prior to the commencement of the course.
