Description



This is a hybrid course. It is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The course content, delivery and assessment will be identical for both groups of students.


This course focuses on the aims and objectives of the subject Society and Culture and the principles which underpin the selection and application of teaching methods for secondary school students. Teaching strategies for effective operation in classroom situations; practical tasks such as analysing the society and culture syllabus, planning units of instruction, selecting media of instruction, and designing items for assessment.


At the end of this course, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of philosophy and practice of society and culture teaching in secondary schools
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of syllabuses and policies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of the classroom implications of Quality Teaching
  • Demonstrate awareness of policies for Indigenous, multicultural and gifted education, gender equity, students with special needs and 'inclusion'.
  • Demonstrate the ability to implement syllabus aims, objectives and learning outcomes using a range of programming approaches and, a range of teaching and learning strategies
  • Demonstrate awareness of the ICT skills embedded in BOS syllabuses
  • Demonstrate awareness of best practice in the teaching and learning of society and culture
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge and awareness of the structure and content of the Stage 6 Syllabuses in society and culture
