Description

This discipline of system dynamics provides a rigorous intellectual framework for the qualitative description, exploration and analysis of complex systems in terms of their processes, information, organisational boundaries and strategies, which facilitates quantitative simulation modelling and analysis for the understanding of system structure and control. This course provides a foundation in general systems theory and then focuses on the problem conceptualisation and system definition stage of a systems modelling project using methodologies and tools such as soft systems methodology, cognitive mapping, causal loop and influence diagrams, system archetypes and policy structure diagrams. The use and misuse of causal loop diagrams in policy analysis and formulation is explored.
