Stream Outline

A cross-disciplinary program in Education and Applied Linguistics designed to provide qualified teachers and other educational professionals working or intending to work teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and/or Languages with a vocationally relevant degree which combines theory and practice.

Graduate Attributes

At the end of the stream, students should have acquired all of the following graduate attributes:
  1. Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the field of education as it relates to their specialist area of study, and the ability to synthesize and apply disciplinary principles and practices to new or complex environments.
  2. Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of research-based learning and the ability to plan, analyse, present implement and evaluate complex activities that contribute to advanced professional practice and/or intellectual scholarship in education.
  3. Demonstrate advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  4. Communicate effectively to a range of audiences, and be capable of independent and collaborative enquiry and team-based leadership.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of international perspectives relevant to the educational field.
  6. Demonstrate an advanced capacity to recognise and negotiate the complex and often contested values and ethical practices that underlie education.

Stream Structure

The program consists of eight courses (48 units of credit):

Students undertake a particular sequence of courses to meet national TESOL accreditation requirements, including 25 days of supervised professional practice in an intensive ESL setting and/or working with ESL classes in mainstream school context (Strand 1). If students already have a recognised qualification in TESOL but want to update and /or extend their professional learning, with the option of going on to higher degree studies, they choose a more specialist focus (Strand 2), including completing a small-scale project.

Strand 1: Sample course structure for qualified teachers who need an accredited specialist qualification in TESOL, and have no prior studies in Linguistics or TESOL.

Four core courses from the Master of Education

Any three TESOL-related elective courses from the School of Education, including:

One capstone TESOL course:
Note: Up to two of the following elective courses from the Master of Applied Linguistics may be taken instead of a TESOL-related elective course:

Strand 2: Sample course structure for qualified teachers who already have an accredited specialist qualification in TESOL and who want to update and /or extend their professional learning, with the option of going on to higher degree studies.

One core course from the Master of Education

AND

Any three TESOL-related elective courses from the School of Education, including:
AND

One EDST research methodology course, including:

AND

Two other elective courses offered by the School of Education

These may be any two courses offered in the School of Education, including the TESOL and research methodology courses noted above (i.e., students may take all of the non-compulsory TESOL education courses or more than one research methodology course).

One or both of the two elective courses may be education courses outside the field of TESOL (e.g., educational leadership, special education, gifted education etc.)

Note: Instead of doing one or both of these free electives, students are welcome to substitute up to two courses from the Master of Applied Linguistics, including:
