Program Description

This program is only available to UNSW staff

The Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching is a UNSW program supported by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and is offered by the School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

This program is designed to meet the needs of busy teachers from diverse teaching settings. Courses in the program include one or more workshops together with related readings, and are designed to be interactive and user-friendly. They have been crafted to model a wide variety of good teaching practices, with specialist teaching staff drawn from across UNSW. Assessment tasks are designed to encourage participants to reflect on their actual teaching practice and consider how this might be improved, informed by selected material from the research literature.

Participants commence the program by attending the staff development workshop, Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT), which is the workshop for the first compulsory course in the program.

Note:

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The program aims to develop scholarly practice through being both academically rigorous while at the same time having practical impact on the quality of teaching and learning. These dual foci are evident in the programs goals:
  • Academically rigorous and challenging
  • Relevant to actual teaching circumstances and career aspirations of participants.
  • Likely to have an impact on immediate colleagues and whole Departments
  • Of intrinsically high quality, in resources, in teaching and in support services
  • Supportive of the development of informed, disciplined and critical reflection on teaching practice
  • A foundation for improvements in teaching practice in both the short and long term.
This program is designed to assist University teachers to understand the theory and practice of effective learning and teaching in higher education. The program will prepare new teachers and support current teachers in enhancing their teaching practice. The process of reflection on the experience of actual teaching will provide a foundation for further exploration in higher education and for individual professional teaching development.

Program Structure

The Graduate Certificate will be awarded after satisfactory completion of 16 units of credit. These will usually be taken over at least three semesters. Courses will be offered on campus in a mix of classroom/online and structured self study. Courses will include application to actual teaching practice. Core Courses to be offered within this program are:
