Program Description

The Master of Arts (Extension) in Interpreting and Translation Studies (Program 8229) aims to prepare students for professional activities as highly qualified translators and interpreters, by developing the necessary competencies to meet the challenges of the growing domestic and international markets. Courses in interpreting and translation are offered in English, with streams in the following languages: Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish.

This program is accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) at Professional Translator and Professional Interpreter level.

This program includes the following eight plans depending on the student’s language combination:

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

The program’s objective is to prepare accredited professional translators and interpreters with all-rounded skills in translation and interpreting by developing competencies necessary for competent and ethical practice on the domestic and international markets, in the light of the most recent theoretical principles and pedagogical approaches to Interpreting & Translation training.

By the end of the program, the students will acquire the learning outcomes necessary to meet the occupational needs of the Translation and Interpreting profession:
(a) understanding of Translation and Interpreting theory, including ethics and professional conduct, and ability to apply it to practice;
(b) professional (technical) Interpreting and Translation competence acquired through the development of Translation and Interpreting skills and competencies; and
(c) ability to apply the above to the professional practice in the context of Translation and Interpreting industry, developed during the practical component of the course.

Career opportunities and professional recognition
Interpreting & Translation is a professional area with opportunities for employment in government and private sectors, required in conference, legal, community and diplomatic settings.

The Master of Arts (Extension) is accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) at Professional Translator and Professional Interpreter level.

Program Structure

Students are required to complete a total of twelve courses (72 units of credit) over the period of at least 3 semesters, including eight core courses in Interpreting & Translation theory and practice (3 contact hours per week) and four elective courses in Contextual and Advance Language (6 units of credit each course).

Academic Rules

Qualifications
(1) A candidate for the degree shall:
  • have been awarded a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from any recognised tertiary institution at credit level acceptable to the Standing Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Committee);
  • demonstrate advanced bilingual proficiency at native or near-native level; or
  • have demonstrated satisfactory performance in the aptitude test administered by the Program.
(2) In exceptional cases, an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be admitted to candidature for the degree.

(3) If the Committee is not satisfied with the qualifications submitted by an applicant the Committee may require the applicant to undergo such assessment or carry out such work as it may prescribe before permitting enrolment.

Enrolment and Progression
(1) An application to enrol as a candidate for the Master of Arts (Extension) in Interpreting and Translation Studies shall be lodged with the Registrar no later than on 30 November (for Semester 1 admission) and 30 May (for Semester 2 admission).

(2) To qualify for the award of the Master of Arts (Extension) in Interpreting and Translation Studies candidates must obtain 72 UOC over a period of study of no less than three semesters. Students must successfully complete the following twelve core and elective courses. In addition, students who wish to qualify for NAATI accreditation in Interpreting and Translation must complete the additional 150 hours Practicum (desirable but not compulsory for students who do not wish to gain NAATI accreditation).

(3) A student enrolling in a course must satisfy the prerequisite requirements of that course. These requirements may be waived at the discretion of the Head of the School/Unit concerned.

(4) The progress of a candidate shall be reviewed annually by the Committee, and as a result of the review the Committee may cancel enrolment or take such other action as it considers appropriate.

Advanced Standing
Advanced standing does not apply to students who wish to be recommended for NAATI accreditation at the completion of the program.

The general policy on advanced standing, credit transfer and/or exemptions may apply for students who do not wish to proceed to NAATI accreditation at the end of the program

Articulation
A sequence of articulated programs may lead to the Master of Arts (Extension) by coursework in Interpreting & Translation Studies. The programs comprise the Graduate Certificate in Interpreting and Translation, Graduate Diploma in Interpreting & Translation, and Master of Arts in Interpreting & Translation Studies. A postgraduate student enrolled in the above programs may progress from the Graduate Certificate to Extended Master’s degree with full credit for courses completed in the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Arts in Interpreting & Translation Studies.
