The Master of Finance is designed for graduates who have completed a finance major in their undergraduate program and who are looking to develop their finance skills by studying more advanced finance topics. There are five streams:
  • Master of Finance (General Finance)
  • Master of Finance (Corporate Finance)
  • Master of Finance (Funds Management)
  • Master of Finance (International Finance)
  • Master of Finance (Investment Banking)
The Master of Finance program is taught on-campus. The typical duration is one year of full-time study and 2-4 years part-time.

Entry to this program requires a Bachelor degree with a major in finance from a recognised institution (or overseas qualifications deemed equivalent) with a credit average overall, and with a credit average in the finance undergraduate major or equivalent. Candidates must also have demonstrated competence in mathematical and statistical methods.

The Master of Finance is developed and managed in close consultation with the finance sector and offers advanced disciplinary depth, exposing students to latest thinking and current research in finance. Applied learning activities, both in and out of classroom, ensure participants are familiar with and can undertake critical analysis of the latest theories, techniques and practices in a chosen subject area. The Learning Partnership exposes students to industry leaders and their experiences.

Program Objectives and Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the MFin, students will have the ability to:
  • understand and apply advanced concepts of finance
  • extend their knowledge of the finance discipline into more specialised areas
  • apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to a financial problem or issue
  • communicate ideas and information logically, concisely and accurately in written and oral formats
  • work both autonomously and collaboratively
  • apply analytical skills to identify and solve agency and corporate governance problems
  • demonstrate an ability to identify and quantify excessive risk taking

Program Structure

The Master of Finance consists of 8 courses (4 core courses and 4 elective courses) and is offered in five streams. Each stream has four core courses and a range of electives. A work-based research project may be undertaken as an elective, subject to approval by the Head of School, Banking & Finance.

The courses studied will depend on the chosen stream, please refer to the available specialisations for further information.

Interested candidates without an appropriate background may wish to consider undertaking the Master of Commerce (specialising in one of Finance, Funds Management, International Finance or Banking) as an alternative program.
