To qualify for the Master of Business Administration (Executive) candidates must successfully complete two stages:
  • Stage 1 (48 units of credit – UOC): candidates must complete the requirements of the Graduate Diploma in Management (Program Code 5950), with a weighted average mark (WAM) of 65% or higher.
  • Stage 2 (48 UOC): candidates must complete the Strategic Management Year (SM Year), which comprises four courses, that must be taken in sequence over a period of no more than one year.
The Strategic Management (SM) Year prepares students to become general managers of large, established organisations, or leaders of small entrepreneurial start-up firms. It covers the fundamental issues of positioning an organisation within a dynamic environment, and creating an organisational design that will deliver the organisation’s strategy.
The key questions that students consider are:
  • What are the key characteristics of the environment in which my firm operates?
  • What options do I have in positioning my firm within that environment?
  • How well does my current strategic position fit with the environment?
  • Why is my organization not performing as well as it could?
  • What options do I have in designing my organisation?
  • How well does my current organisation design fit with my strategic objectives?
  • What are the future strategic options for my firm?
  • How can I transform my organisation to better fit a changed environment and to meet the challenges we face in the future?
The design of the Strategic Management Year is organized around the fundamental problems of the general manager. Unlike heads of particular functions (R&D, productions, sales, marketing, finance, etc.) general managers always need to consider the implications of an action for the entire organization. For this reason, the Strategic Management Year develops holistic and integrative thinkers who readily take a cross-functional perspective. The Strategic Management Year uses a problem based learning approach so that the program is more like a learning laboratory and less like a traditional classroom taught course. To equip students to be able to act as general managers the course simulates, to the extent that it is possible, the tasks and challenges they will face.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

Throughout the Strategic Management Year students will develop the following critical skills for becoming an effective general manager:
  • understand and apply concepts related to general management, in their own and other organisations, focusing on the interdisciplinary application of course concepts and frameworks
  • identify similarities and differences between strategic roles and lower level functional manager roles, as well as how these roles work together towards achieving the organisation’s fundamental objective
  • think critically by identifying assumptions and utilising a range of data gathering and analysis techniques to solve management problems
  • demonstrate systematic and creative approaches to decision making, including in their workplace
  • communicate ideas and information logically and concisely in writing, oral presentations and class demonstrate an understanding of leadership skills, including reflection on their personal leadership style, and of the challenges of working effectively within a team
  • demonstrate an awareness of working with diversity and of the relevance of management issues in a global context
  • demonstrate an understanding of ethical dilemmas of management problems
