Program Description
The Master of Educational Leadership degree by coursework (program 8960, stream code EDSTOS8960) is designed to provide aspiring and current educational leaders with an understanding of recent developments in theory, research and practice in educational leadership in order to equip them to lead educational organisations.
Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
At the end of the program, students should have acquired all of the following graduate attributes:
- Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the field of education as it relates to their specialist area of study, and the ability to synthesize and apply disciplinary principles and practices to new or complex environments.
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of research-based learning and the ability to plan, analyse, present implement and evaluate complex activities that contribute to advanced professional practice and/or intellectual scholarship in education.
- Demonstrate advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills.
- Communicate effectively to a range of audiences, and be capable of independent and collaborative enquiry and team-based leadership.
- Demonstrate an understanding of international perspectives relevant to the educational field.
- Demonstrate an advanced capacity to recognise and negotiate the complex and often contested values and ethical practices that underlie education.
Program Structure
In the Master of Educational Leadership (program 8960, plan code EDSTOS8960) students undertake eight courses (48UOC). Students complete two core courses (12UOC) and six elective courses (36 UOC), with a minimum of four electives to be chosen from Educational Leadership electives. The remaining two courses are selected from any Master of Education electives, including those in educational leadership.

Academic Rules
1. The degree of Master of Educational Leadership at Pass level may be awarded by the Council to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed a program of advanced study.
Entry requirements
2. (1) A candidate for the degree shall:
(a) have been awarded an appropriate degree of Bachelor from the University of New South Wales or a qualification considered equivalent from another university or tertiary institution at a level acceptable to the Standing Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Committee), plus either a pre-service teaching qualification or three years full time experience in education or training; and
(b) have had at least one year's practical experience in an area relevant to the study of education of a kind acceptable to the Committee.
(2) In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree.
(3) If the Committee is not satisfied with the qualifications submitted by an applicant the Committee may require the applicant to undergo such assessment or carry out such work as the Committee may prescribe, before permitting enrolment.
Enrolment and Progression
3. (1) An application to enrol as a candidate for the degree shall be lodged with the Registrar at least two calendar months before the commencement of the semester in which enrolment is to begin.
(2) To qualify for the award of the degree candidates must obtain over a period of study of no less than two semesters 48 units of credit. The maximum period of candidature shall be four academic semesters from the date of commencement for a full-time candidate and eight semesters for a part-time candidate. In special cases an extension of these times may be granted by the Committee.
(3) A student enrolling in a course must satisfy the prerequisite and corequisite requirements in that course. These requirements may be waived at the discretion of the Head of the School.
(4) The progress of a candidate shall be reviewed at least once annually by the Committee and as a result of the review the Committee may cancel enrolment or take such other action as it considers appropriate.

Articulation
The Master of Educational Leadership forms part of an approved sequence of articulated programs comprising the Graduate Certificate and Masters degree in the same area of specialisation. A postgraduate student enrolled in an articulated program may progress from Graduate Certificate to Masters level with full credit for courses completed in the earlier program in the sequence.
