Program Description

The Graduate Diploma in IT is intended for students with no or minimal prior computing background. Students with some computing background who want to obtain a broad understanding of computing might also find this program attractive.

The GradDip will be most attractive to those who are not eligible for direct admission to the MIT program, as well as those seeking a shorter qualification.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The aim of this program is to provide students with a broad-based IT education, and more specialised knowledge in up to two areas, enabling them to work in a range of positions in the IT industry.

Program Structure

Entry Requirements
  • a three year undergraduate degree equivalent to a standard Australian bachelor degree in engineering or science that included Mathematics up to at least year two level; and a high credit average achieved over the final two years of study
  • Or articulation from the Graduate Certificate in Computing (7543).
Program Requirements

Students are required to complete 12 courses from the CSE course list Level 0, 1, 2, or 3.

Non-CSE elective options: Students may receive one elective option for every four CSE courses completed, which includes one free elective.

Students with advanced standing will forfeit some of their elective options as the ratio of 1:4 CSE Courses to Non-CSE Electives will still apply.

It is possible for students to complete the program without using any non-CSE electives, provided they are not in the Bioinformatics stream.

Students enrolled in the Bioinformatics stream, who have no advanced standing, and who are required to complete MATH5846 as a co-requisite for MATH5856 will use all of their elective options in meeting the requirements for this stream.

Students enrolled in the Bioinformatics stream who do have advanced standing should seek advice from the CSE Student Office regarding the use of their elective options prior to enrolment.

Streams

Up to two of the following streams can be nominated over the duration of the program, and they will be awarded on completion of the degree.
Advanced Standing

Advanced standing is possible in up to 50% of the program. Students can seek advanced standing in the following courses only:
Students wishing to apply for Advanced standing should consult the CSE Postgraduate Advanced Standing, Exemption, Substitution website.

Completion Options

After successful completion of twelve courses students have two options:
  • Graduate from the Graduate Diploma; OR
  • Apply to articulate to the Masters program with credit for the completed courses.
Students can apply to articulate from the Graduate Diploma in IT program to the Masters program (8543) provided they have failed no courses. Full credit may be granted.

Students should pay careful attention when selecting their courses to ensure that they align with the program for the major of their preference.
