Program Description

The Faculty of Engineering offers a two year Masters Degree program. The program comprises streams leading to a Master of Engineering. Flexibility and choice are maintained throughout the two year program by providing many elective courses. It serves as an entry point for students to move into the engineering profession.

This degree is offered in the following specialisations (streams):

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The proposed Masters Degree program is designed to enable students to fulfil a number of needs including:
  • Acquiring in-depth knowledge within a chosen discipline.
  • Deeper project experience.
  • Increased technical confidence across selected research discipline(s).
  • Developing and expanding knowledge and skills in engineering management.
  • Providing opportunities for continuing professional development.
  • Providing students with flexible pathways for completion of courses and a master degree qualification.
  • Updating qualifications and knowledge to meet/ maintain professional accreditation standards.

Program Structure

To qualify for the Masters Degree, students should successfully complete:
  • 96 UOC of courses from one of the streams offered, and
  • 60 days of industrial experience.

Academic Rules

(a) Entry Requirements
Entry into this Master's program requires the completion of a 4-year non-accredited (under the Washington Accord) Bachelor of Engineering degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline. Alternatively, eligible applicants include those who hold a 3-year Engineering Science degree in a cognate discipline, at least equivalent to the first three years of an Engineering degree accredited under the Washington accord. A minimum overall average of at least 65%, or equivalent, over the duration of the qualifying Bachelor's degree is also required. A pathway for entry into the program for graduates from both 4-year Bachelor of Engineering degrees in non-cognate disciplines, and 3-year Bachelor of Science degrees, exists via enrolment first into the Bachelor of Engineering (BE) program, where advanced standing (to a maximum of 2 years) may be granted.

(b) Advanced standing and exemptions
No advanced standing will be allowed in this program. At the discretion of the program authority, students with relevant and sufficient background in any of the professional or disciplinary electives may be granted exemption for specified courses and allowed to substitute additional advanced disciplinary electives.

(c) Electives
Each stream in the program requires completion of elective courses which must be selected from the approved list for each stream.

(d) Project Work
Within each stream, students must undertake project work, split over 2 sessions in their final year. A project involves an independent investigation at an advanced level by the student and may include research, design, feasibility or other analysis requiring integration of knowledge and evaluation across a range of topics in the area of the specialisation. Work-based projects are encouraged for practising engineers provided they meet the requirements of advanced independent study. Work-based projects must be approved by the program authority prior to commencement of the project.

(e) Industrial Training
A requirement for the program is the completion of 60 days of industrial experience in the relevant discipline, preferably in Australia. Students who have already completed such industrial experience may be granted an exemption.

(f) Award of Degrees
A student who completes the requirements for the degree shall receive at graduation a testamur for the degree of Master of Engineering.

(g) Administration of Programs
A student's program will be administed by the relevant school within the Faculty of Engineering.

(h) Enrolment
An application to enrol as a candidate for the Masters degree shall be lodged with the Registrar at least two calendar months before the commencement of the session in which enrolment is to begin.

Computing Requirements

All software required for coursework is provided on the computers in the School computer laboratories. Some students find it advantageous to buy their own computer and software so that they can work at home. Some external courses may require students to own their own computer with Microsoft Office or equivalent. Specialist software packages that are required for external courses will be provided as part of the course pack to students.

Professional Accreditation

The streams for Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications in the two year Master's program are professionally accredited by Engineers Australia. Provisional accreditation is being sought for the streams Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
