Program Description

The Master of Financial Planning is designed for graduates who are seeking an exciting career working with clients to build long lasting and trusted relationships, providing sound financial guidance and education. This comprehensive postgraduate program is designed not only to provide you with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission’s (ASIC) Regulatory Guidelines 146 (RG146) compliance assessed at AQF Level 9, Tax Agent Service Act (2009)/Tax Practitioners Board’s Tax (Financial) Advisor requirements in commercial law and taxation for financial planners compliance, but also extensive studies that will give you advanced standing towards Financial Planning Association’s CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification program.

Taught by leading Finance and Taxation academics at UNSW Business School, this program provides you with a distinguished level of training to advance in the career of personal financial and investment advisory. Suitable for working professionals, you can choose from a combination of distance, intensive and face-to-face learning courses to suit your work schedule.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The program offers you a challenging learning environment to achieve an integrated learning in financial planning, investment and taxation. It also provides you with the learning required for professional accreditation. Graduates develop knowledge and skills in financial markets, financial products, investment (theory, evidence, and quantitative techniques), risk management, financial planning, taxation law and strategies, compliance, ethical and professional conduct.

Program Structure

The Master of Financial Planning program consists of 12 courses (72 UOC):

Complete 8 compulsory core courses (48 UOC).

Compulsory Core courses:
Complete 2 to 4 elective core courses (up to 24 UOC). If only 2 elective core courses are chosen, you will need to complete another 2 elective courses from lists A or B below.

Academic Rules

1.5 years full-time, 3 years part-time (72 UOC).
  1. Enrol in the Master of Financial Planning and complete 72 UOC.
  2. Complete 8 compulsory core courses and up to 4 elective core courses.
  3. If less than 4 elective core courses are chosen, complete remaining elective courses from List A or B.

Credits awarded from RPL or professional qualifications
As determined by UNSW Business School, a maximum of 12 UOC may be awarded based on your previous studies and 12 UOC in recognition of a CFP qualification.

Pathway programs
If you do not have an undergraduate degree or a credit average in your previous bachelor degree, you may be eligible for the Graduate Certificate in Financial Planning as a pathway program to the Master of Financial Planning program.

Entry requirements

Category A
Recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) in Commerce or Finance with a credit average overall, as determined by the UNSW Australia Business School.

Category B
Recognised non-business related bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) with a credit average overall as determined by the Business School, plus a minimum of two years full time professional work experience.

Professional accreditation

The Master of Financial planning graduates can claim compliance to:
  1. Australian Securities and Investment Commission RG146 knowledge and skill requirements at Tier 1 Specialist in Financial Planning, Securities, Managed Investments, Superannuation, Insurance, Margin Lending [requires FINS5512, FINS5513, FINS5510, and FINS5537]. Tier 1 Derivatives specialisation compliance requires FINS5535 as an elective.
  2. Advanced standing requirement towards Financial Planning Association’s CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification program.
  3. Tax Agent Service Act (2009)/Tax Practitioners Board’s Tax (Financial) Advisor requirements in commercial law (requires TABL5511) and taxation for financial planners (requires TABL527).
