Program Description

The handbook provides you with information on the degree structure you would need to follow for the year you commence your study.

The Graduate Certificate in Economics is offered as an on-campus program. Students are required to complete 4 courses (24 Units of Credit) comprised of one course each from 3 core areas and one elective course. All courses are 6 Units of Credit.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Economics program, students will have demonstrated:
  1. the cognitive skills and capacity to analyse economic problems using advanced modern tools used in economics;
  2. the ability to synthesize mathematical economic analysis and provide economic intuition for the results;
  3. the capacity to use econometric estimation techniques to analyse empirical problems.
  4. communication skills in delivering knowledge and ideas.

Core Microeconomics Course

Students are required to complete one course (6 UOC) from the following:

Academic Rules

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Economics (24 UOC) with an average mark of 70% will be eligible to enrol in the Masters of Economics (48 UOC).

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement is:
  • a bachelor degree from an Australian university or equivalent overseas institution in economics (BEc); OR
  • other advanced cognate disciplines with required technical skills (e.g. mathematics, finance, or statistics) with WAM of 65%, plus a compulsory component of intermediate level microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics as well as competency in mathematical and statistical methods; OR
  • equivalent as determined by the UNSW Business School.
Entrance to the program also requires that applicants should:
  • have achieved an average of 65% or higher in the last two years of economics and quantitative methods courses in their bachelor degree; and
  • satisfy the University's English Language requirement.
Applicants without an adequate background may be required to undertake some preliminary coursework in intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics as well as econometrics.
