Progression to Stage 2

Stage 2:
Stage 2 continues the development of personal leadership attributes and prepares students to become executives of large, established organisations, or leaders of small entrepreneurial start-up firms.

Students enter Stage 2 via MNGT7480. The course assists students to identify useful models for making sense of their managerial experiences and for developing the capacity to think and act as leaders. Personal, tacit theories about what works (from experience and previous learning) are unearthed and discussed against management research insights to instil an evidence-based approach to management.
On the successful completion of MNGT7480, students enter the Strategic Management Year.

The design of the Strategic Management Year is organised around the fundamental executive level problems in the organisations. Unlike heads of particular functions (R&D, productions, sales, marketing, finance, etc.) executives always need to consider the implications of an action for the entire organisation. For this reason, the Strategic Management Year develops holistic and integrative thinkers who readily take a cross-functional perspective. The Strategic Management Year uses a problem based learning approach so that the program is more like a learning laboratory and less like a traditional classroom taught course. To equip students to be able to act as executives the course simulates, to the extent that it is possible, the tasks and challenges they will face.

It covers the fundamental issues of positioning an organisation within a dynamic environment, and creating an organisational design that will deliver the organisation’s strategy.

The key questions that students consider are:
  • What are the key characteristics of the environment in which my firm operates?
  • What options do I have in positioning my firm within that environment?
  • How well does my current strategic position fit with the environment?
  • Why is my organization not performing as well as it could?
  • What options do I have in designing my organisation?
  • How well does my current organisation design fit with my strategic objectives?
  • What are the future strategic options for my firm?
  • How can I transform my organisation to better fit a changed environment and to meet the challenges we face in the future?

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
