Program Description

The Master of Information Systems Management (MISM) program is suitable if you are a professional, or information systems or computer science graduate who sees yourself advancing into management and leadership roles in the industry. The program is a
comprehensive, challenging and contemporary program, based on a set of Information Systems executive core competencies established through extensive US and EU research on Information Systems skills.

The Master of Information Systems Management offers will develop the core skills needed to succeed as an industry leader in information, communications and technology. You will obtain strong analytical and technical skills to assess, design, implement, and manage business information systems in a fast-changing business environment, across multiple organisations.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The objectives of the MISM are to provide:


1. The competencies needed for contemporary mid-level to ‘C’ level IT management, including:

• A thorough understanding of the conceptual, theoretical and practical frameworks underpinning a broad range of IT management functions
• The application of these concepts, theories, frameworks, techniques and skills.

2. An awareness of contemporary issues and development in the new and emerging national and international IT management landscape.
3. Exposure to world-class industry thinkers and leaders in IT management.
4. The critical thinking and problem solving skills to develop your personal career ambitions.
5. A dynamic, interactive, team-based learning environment with professional and experienced colleagues.
6. An awareness of what career paths and option exist for you.

There are two categories of entry
1 year program - Applicants with

(a) A recognised related Bachelor Honours degree (or equivalent qualification) with a major in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science or Software Engineering and a credit average overall, as determined by the UNSW Business School. Students admitted under category A are exempt from core 1 and must complete core 2, the elective requirements and capstone course; i.e. 48 UOC.

(b) A recognised Bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) with a major in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science or Software Engineering, with a credit average overall and a minimum of two years of full-time relevant professional experience after the completion of the degree, as determined by the UNSW Business School. Students admitted under category B are exempt from core 1 and must complete core 2, the elective requirements and capstone course; i.e. 48 UOC.

18 month program – Applicants with the following:

(c) A recognised Bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) and a minimum of 1 year relevant professional experience, after the completion of the degree, as determined by the UNSW Business School. Students admitted under category C must complete core 1, core 2, the elective requirements and the capstone course; i.e. 72 UOC either of the following:

Program Structure

The 1 Year Master of Information Systems Management program consists of:
8 courses (48 UOC): 4 core courses (Core 2; 24 UOC); plus capstone course (12 UOC); plus 2 elective courses (6 UOC each) from the courses listed below.

The18 month (1.5 Year) Master of Information Systems Management program consists of: 12 courses (72 UOC): Core 1 courses (48 UOC) plus Core 2 (48 UOC) courses, plus capstone course (12 UOC), and 2 elective courses (6 UOC each) from the courses listed below.

Academic Rules

A Master of Information Systems Management may be awarded by the Council to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed an approved program of study having completed 8 courses (48 UOC) (includes course credits transferred) or 12 courses (72 UOC) (includes course credits transferred), depending on the entry point.

1. A candidate for the degree shall be required to undertake such formal courses and pass such assessment as is prescribed.

Entry Requirements:

Category A
To be eligible for the program (with credits), you need to have:

A recognised Honours degree (with a research thesis) in information systems, information technology or computer science, with a Second Upper Class (2.1) or better

OR

Category B
To be eligible for the program (with credits), you need to have:
• A recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) in information systems, information technology or computer science with a credit average as determined by the UNSW Postgraduate Coursework Entry Calculator; and
• At least 2 years full-time relevant work experience

For the 1.5 years full-time (or 3 years part-time) program (without credits)

Category C
To be eligible for the program (without credits), you need to have:
• A recognised bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) with a credit average as determined by the UNSW Postgraduate Coursework Entry Calculator; and
• At least 1 year full-time relevant work experience
