The Master Public Health / Master of Health Management (Extension) dual program is an innovative approach to postgraduate health education enabling candidates to specialise in both public health and health management and develop research skills in health management.

The dual MPH / MHM (Extension) program provides students with advanced disciplinary knowledge and skills to undertake population health and health services management roles in government, community and health service settings in Australia and internationally. The program develops public health and health services leaders who have the capabilities to manage within increasingly complex and rapidly changing health system environments. The program promotes sophisticated understanding and application across the complex body of multidisciplinary knowledge of public health and health management including: epidemiology, biostatistics, social determinants of health, health promotion, population targeted health research methods, leadership and workforce management, strategic planning and change management, quality improvement, and health program and policy design, implementation and evaluation. Graduates are equipped with the specialised skills needed for health management research and evidence based professional practice and leadership across a range of contexts including ministries and departments of health, government and non-government and voluntary organisations, primary care and community healthcare services in both public and private sectors. The program fosters judgment-ready practitioners critically reflexive practitioners who can manage and improve health service systems and outcomes and can contribute to improving public health outcomes in diverse settings.

Candidates must complete 96 Units of Credit (UOC) comprising:

MHM core courses: PHCM9041, PHCM9391, PHCM9441, PHCM9748

Electives (30 UoC)

PHCM9498 is a pre-requisite core course for PHCM9517, PHCM9518, PHCM9520 and PHCM9521

Note: The 48 UOC MHM requirements to be completed with a minimimum average mark of 65% to progress to the Extension component of the MHM are the 6 MHM core courses and 2 other courses, which may include any MPH core or elective courses.

Streams (Areas of Specialisation)

The following stream is available in the Master of Public Health as part of the 9057 dual Master of Public Health / Master of Health Management (Extension). This allows students to focus their studies on an area where the School has considerable expertise.

Students considering enrolling in this stream must seek advice from the MPH Program Director to ensure that they select the correct courses to meet the requirements of the stream as well as the rules of the dual Masters Extension program.

Additional course requirement

Students from non-English speaking countries who have not previously completed a degree in Australia or other English-speaking country and are enrolled in the full time program in Sydney (Kensington campus) are required to take the following additional preparatory course in their first semester. This course is available for all students to assist to gain maximum benefit from their study. The course is made available at no charge to students and does not contribute to the UOC requirements of the degree.

Students enrolled in the MPH / MHM (Extn) program will be required to exit with the MPH/MHM on completion of 72 UOC that meet the requirements of the MPH/MHM program if they fail to achieve an average mark of 65% to meet requirements to progress to the Extension component of the program. Students may also exit early with the 48 UOC MPH or 48 UOC MHM, or with a Graduate Diploma (36 UOC) or Graduate Certificate (24 UOC) in either Public Health or Health Management on completion of courses that meet the requirements of the relevant program.
