Program Description

The Graduate Certificate provides recognition to students who are limited to study for one session or one year only. It will be awarded to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed the program of study outlined below. The GradCert articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Health Management, Master of Health Management, or Master of Public Health programs.

Credit for courses completed in the GradCert may be transferred to the Masters programs, in accordance with the UNSW policy on credit transfer, provided students demonstrate adequate academic performance (minimum Credit average).

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The Graduate Certificate in Health Management provides students with the theoretical and technical capacities for current and future health leadership roles in health service management in Australia or internationally. The Graduate Certificate provides understanding in a range of health management domains. Graduates develop high level skills for professional practice in a range of health service settings: hospital and community healthcare services, aged care services, Ministries and Departments of Health, Government and Non-Government and voluntary organisations, primary care and general practice, in both public and private sectors. Graduates are equipped to contribute knowledge and techniques with well-developed judgement for improving health service outcomes in specific and diverse health management contexts.

The requirements of this program are for students commencing their studies in 2017. Continuing students can view their original program requirements in previous editions of the handbook.

Program Structure

The Graduate Certificate program is offered in full-time/part-time and internal/external modes. An optional residential week is held prior to the commencement of semester 1 and 2 each year.

The program comprises the following components, for a total of 24 units of credit:
  • Core courses - 12 units of credit
  • Elective courses - 12 units of credit

International Students who have not previously completed a degree in Australia and are enrolled in the full time program in Sydney (Kensington campus) are required to take the following additional course in their first semester.
This course is available for all students to assist them with academic literacy practice and includes critical reading, thinking and writing, oral communication and managing postgraduate study. The course is made available at no charge to students and does not contribute to the program requirements of the degree. Local students who have not studied recently are also welcome to enrol to assist them with the transition back to university and to assist them with their academic skills.

Please note: The Graduate Certificate in Health Management cannot be completed on a full-time basis if students commence in Semester 1 or Summer. Students should apply to commence in Semester 2 if they want to complete the program on a full-time basis.

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to have either:
  • An undergraduate degree in a field relevant to public health or health management (see list below)* and two years full-time professional or volunteer experience. This may also include equivalent professional experience acquired as part of a degree of 4 or more years duration (e.g. MBBS, MD)
OR
  • An undergraduate degree plus an honours or postgraduate degree in a field relevant to public health or health management (see list below)*
[*Examples include, but are not restricted to, medicine, nursing, allied health, health sciences, biomedical sciences, dentistry, social work, sociology, behavioural and social sciences, social work, psychology, marketing, human services, emergency services, environmental health, veterinary science, health administration, business, management, engineering, law, science, mathematics and statistics, economics, policy studies and development studies.]
