Program Description
The Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics offers specialised training in ocular therapeutics, such that suitably qualified and registered optometrists in NSW will be able to prescribe certain ocular therapeutic agents for the benefit of their patients. This program has been developed to address the required Competency Standards for Ocular Therapeutics as developed by the Board of Optometrical Registration of NSW in conjunction with the University of New South Wales and recognised by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand.
The Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics comprises two part-time courses of 12 units of credit each (24 units of credit in total); OPTM 7213 Ocular Therapy (didactic component) and OPTM 7117 Ocular Therapy 2 (clinical component). The program may be completed in two sessions (1 year). Successful completion of OPTM 7213 (achieving an aggregate examination mark of 65% or above) will allow candidates to progress to the clinical component in OPTM 7117.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes
Upon completion students will:
- Be able to recognise and meet the competency standards for Ocular Therapeutics as outlined by the Board of Optometrical Registration of NSW.
- Demonstrate disciplinary knowledge in Ocular Therapeutics and how prescribed therapeutic-agents can be used for the benefit of patients.
- Have developed communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills through an effective and enriched learning environment that is evidenced based.
- Have developed knowledge and skills in the use of specialised optometric technologies and methodologies
- Have gained appropriate training and experience in effective communication to a range of audiences including one-on-one interactions with patients and to a group

The program consists of two compulsory courses listed below. There is no elective course to be taken for this program. A total of 24 UOC (in 2 Sessions) is required for this Graduate award.
- OPTM7117 Ocular Therapy 2 (12 UOC)
- OPTM7213 Ocular Therapy (12 UOC)

This program is only open for mid-year enrolments and is completed part time.
Pathways
Students interested in further study may consider applying for program 8073 Master of Optometry, and will be considered for 24 UOC advanced standing in accordance with the UNSW Policy and Procedure on Recognition of Prior Learning.
