Program Description

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Built Environment program is a research degree that has a coursework component and a major research project. It provides an opportunity to undertake research in various fields including architecture, digital modelling, interior architecture, landscape architecture, industrial design, property development, construction management and economics, sustainable development, planning and urban design.

The minimum requirement for Postgraduate Research Degree (PhD, Master by Research or MPhil) is an appropriate undergraduate degree, usually at honours level, in a field represented within UNSW Built Environment, or another appropriate discipline. In exceptional cases students may be admitted on the basis of professional experience.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The MPhil aims at developing students' research competence, creative thinking and problem solving skills. The largest component within the MPhil is the research project. This offers students the opportunity for self-directed learning with the benefits of individual supervision and the cognate development of research skills through directed learning.

Program Structure

The normal duration of the program is three academic semesters (full time) or six academic semesters (part time).

The MPhil is a research degree with a coursework component, comprising 72 Units of Credit. A thesis, awarded 54 Units of Credit, embodies the result of an original investigation.
