Program Description

Facilities are available in the School for students to undertake research studies leading to the degree of Master of Health Administration, as either full-time internal students, part-time internal students, or part-time students external to the University. It is designed primarily as training in advanced work. Candidates must demonstrate ability to undertake research by the submission of a thesis embodying the results of an original investigation or design. Candidates are required to have a suitable first degree and are normally expected to have a minimum of three years' experience in their proposed field of study within the health or hospital services.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The Master of Health Administration (MHA) is designed primarily as training in advanced work. Candidates must demonstrate ability to undertake research by the submission of a thesis embodying the results of an original investigation or design. Candidates must have at least three years experience in health services.

Program Structure

The degree of Master of Health Administration by research may be awarded by the Council on the recommendation of the Higher Degree Committee of the Faculty of Medicine (hereinafter referred to as the Committee) to a candidate who has demonstrated ability to undertake research by the submission of a thesis embodying the results of an original investigation or design.

Academic Rules

Candidature
An approved candidate shall be enrolled in one of the following categories:
  • full-time attendance at the University;
  • part-time attendance at the University;
  • external - not in regular attendance at the University and using research facilities external to the University.
A candidate shall be required to undertake an original investigation or design on an approved topic. The candidate may also be required to undergo such examination and perform such other work as may be prescribed by the Committee.

The work shall be carried out under the direction of a supervisor appointed from the full-time members of the University staff.

The progress of a candidate shall be reviewed annually by the Committee following a report by the candidate, the supervisor and the head of the school and as a result of such review the Committee may cancel enrolment or take such other action as it considers appropriate.

Enrolment Requirements
A student is only permitted to submit only after 144 units of credits (uoc) have been undertaken. A full-time load during one Session is worth 24uoc and a part-time load is worth 12uoc.

In the case of a candidate who has been awarded the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours or who has had previous research experience, the Committee may approve remission of up to two sessions for a full-time candidate and four sessions for a part-time or external candidate.

Candidates should not exceed the upper enrolment-limit of 192uoc. Financial penalties may occur as a result.

Thesis
On completing the program of study a candidate shall
  1. submit a thesis embodying the results of the original investigation or design.
  2. give in writing to the Registrar two months notice of intention to submit the thesis.
The thesis shall present an account of the candidate's own research. In special cases work done conjointly with other persons may be accepted, provided the Committee is satisfied about the extent of the candidate's part in the joint research. The candidate may also submit any work previously published whether or not such work is related to the thesis.

Three copies of the thesis shall be presented in a form which complies with the requirements of the University for the preparation and submission of higher degree theses.

It shall be understood that the University retains the three copies of the thesis submitted for examination and is free to allow the thesis to be consulted or borrowed. Subject to the provisions of the Copyright Act, 1968, the University may issue the thesis in whole or in part, in photostat or microfilm or other copying medium.

Qualification Requirements for Applicants

A candidate for the degree shall:
  1. Have an MBBS or other medical degree (including such qualifications from another country), or
  2. Have been awarded the degree of Bachelor, and have relevant experience.
In addition to (1) or (2), the candidate must have support from the proposed supervisor and the relevant Head of School.
In exceptional cases an applicant who submits evidence of such other academic and professional qualifications as may be approved by the Committee may be permitted to enrol for the degree.

When the Committee is not satisfied with the qualifications submitted by an applicant the Committee may require the applicant, before being permitted to enrol, to undergo such examination or carry out such work as the Committee may prescribe.
