The School of Physical, Environmental and Mathematical Sciences encompasses the disciplines of Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Oceanography and Physics.

The primary teaching role of the School is in the Bachelor of Science degree. Arts students can also choose to study some Science courses in their degree and, in particular, the major in Geography is a popular option for Arts students as it provides a bridge between the social and natural sciences. The School also contributes very significantly to teaching in the Bachelor of Engineering, Technology and Business degrees.

The School contributes to postgraduate coursework programs in Arts, Defence Studies, Engineering Science, Operations Research and Statistics and Management Studies.

The research record of the School is strong, with national and international standings gained through collaboration with Australian and international universities and continuing success in attracting research funding. Major areas of research in the School include: inorganic and physical chemistry; physical and human geography, including geographic information analysis and remote sensing; physical oceanography; mathematics and statistics with particular application to continuum mechanics, optics and combustion; physics with particular application to advanced materials, astronomy and astrophysics, lower atmosphere physics, and theoretical physics.

The School welcomes prospective postgraduate research students interested in studying for a Doctor of Philosophy or Masters degree by research.
