Partly because the way they comment on the human condition is very adaptable, they continue to be a major source of inspiration to contemporary artists, philosophers, writers and film-makers. An understanding of this influence greatly enhances our appreciation of modern culture. An introduction to the nature of myth, to the creation myths, the stories of the gods and their interaction with humans, and to some of the great cycles - Oedipus, Orpheus, the Trojan War. In order to provide a focus, the myths will be discussed in terms of stories of families and family groups.
