Description The West has long held a particular fascination for Japan and its people and culture. This fascination arose partly because of Japan's two centuries of self-imposed isolation during the 17th and 18th centuries and following the Meiji Restoration, despite rapid modernisation, and the preservation of many aspects of traditional culture. This course provides an introduction to the language and culture of Japan. Topics include Japan's cultural history, its languages and writing system, Japan's people and geography, traditional arts and aspects of Japanese society including psychological makeup, social stratification and customs.
