Description

An overview of significant cultural and social characteristics that have defined Korea from early times to the present. Key themes include social, cultural and political change, the role of the family, gender, education, and the relationship between the state and the individual.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • Understand the importance of Korea's place in the world and specifically, East Asia
  • Understand the major intellectual and cultural trends that have defined Korea (and in some instances, distinguished it from China and Japan)
  • Understand the implications of socio-cultural stratification that is still important in Korea today.

Assessment

  • Tutorial discussion - 10%
  • Two in-class short answer/essay - 50%
  • Examination 1 - 20%
  • Examination 2 - 20%
