Description

This course introduces students to structural analysis and computer modelling of structures. Revision of Mechanics of Solids; the principles and requirements of structural analysis applied to indeterminate trusses and simple frames; structural idealisation; determinacy; principles of virtual work; the force method (flexibility analysis). Stiffness method (displacement method) of analysis for beams and frames; second order behaviour of frames; slenderness effects in frames; elastic stability analysis; software applications; moment distribution applied to continuous beams and non-sway frames; limit analysis.
