Description

This course provides an opportunity for the formal study and discussion of the personalities and elements that have shaped and enriched twentieth century jazz music styles and other selected genres of popular music. Through the application of some of the theories of ethnomusicology, basic musicology, and cultural studies, an understanding of the social ecology of popular music genres and of jazz will be sought. It is the intention of this course to outline and investigate various methodologies for the formal study of popular music. This course is designed to enhance the student’s knowledge of the various styles associated with jazz music and to encourage students to apply that knowledge to the understanding of, and engagement with, a wider range of musical styles.
