Description NOTE:This course is only available to Study Abroad students, i.e it is not available to students enrolled in a degree program at UNSW. It is held for 4 weeks in June each year. To be eligible to enrol, students must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited university, with a minimum 2.8 GPA
Students in this course will visit protected conservation areas in Bhutan (in the Himalayan mountains), and two World Heritage Areas in Australia (Kakadu and the Blue Mountains). The course introduces students to the challenges, conflicts and opportunities relating to protected conservation areas, through the comparative examples presented by these three diverse locations. The course addresses how to balance ecological with economic, political and socio-cultural needs. The course will examine the environmental and cultural benefits of protected area management from the perspective of the traditional (indigenous) owners. Students will go into the field with staff from conservation agencies as well as with local communities to confront on-ground management challenges. Topics include: protected area management; biodiversity conservation and sustainable use strategies; management of fire; human-wildlife conflicts; balancing stakeholder interests; Indigenous co-management; community participation; sustainable tourism; impacts of urban development. This subject is of particular relevance to students interested in environmental governance, protected area management such as national parks and world heritage areas, and the role of local community participation.
