Description

Subject Area: Music

This course aims to acquaint students with the classical musical traditions of South Asia. It introduces students to the content, aesthetic theory and practice of this music as traditionally understood. It examines the way in which musical practice and reception have developed during the late and post-colonial periods, investigating the impact of such diverse forces as the rise of the middle-class, state sponsorship and the recording industry. It charts the changing interest in this music outside South Asia, and the tensions and transformations that occur as a result of the relocation of artistic practice through migration. The course offers students the opportunity to develop innovative research approaches and initiatives. There may be the opportunity for in-class performances for students with a strong music background.
