Description

This course examines the theoretical, philosophical and aesthetic considerations of colour and the ways in which such thinking has impelled both the perception and the production of art and design. Beginning with an interrogation of Goethe's seminal text, "Theory of Colours", we will consider other theorists, such as Newton, Wittgenstein, Schopenhauer, Chevreul, Gage, Hardin, Helmholtz, Landesman and Maund, and explore the cultural, psychological and scientific importance that has been ascribed to colour. We will also examine the ways in which these philosophies of colour have influenced a range of artists, such as Delacroix, Matisse, Seurat, Signac, Turner and Constable. The course also examines key designers such as Kopacz, Linton, Lenclos and Mahnke.
