Description

This course will provide an overview of Australian Indigenous art.  It will examine art forms that were practiced prior to European settlement, traditional art forms still practised in more remote parts of Australia, as well as the range of contemporary practices by indigenous Australian artists ranging from, for example, Western Desert painting to art practices considered "urban", insofar as they are in more direct dialogue with the Western tradition.  Various art historical debates about the interpretation of Aboriginal art will be considered, as well as more interdisciplinary and anthropological approaches.
