Civil-Military Relations in the Asia-Pacific Region - ZHSS2408 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Description How do states control their armed forces in order to prevent military intervention in domestic politics? The Asia Pacific Region provides two models of successful civilian control over the military: liberal democratic states where the armed forces do not play a political role and communist states where the military plays a highly political role. Elsewhere in the region the pattern is mixed. Several states have experienced repeated military intervention followed by a return to civilian rule while other states remain firmly under military control. This course examines these varying patterns of civil-military relations and military intervention in selected countries from the Asia Pacific Region.
