Description

Artificial macromolecules are of great importance. Synthetic methods of polymerisation are defined and illustrated through examples such as polyethylene, synthetic rubbers, silicones, nylons, epoxy resins and carbon-fibre reinforced plastics. The degradation of polymers is also discussed. Some fundamental aspects of polymer solutions and melts are also explored, e.g. polymer statistics are related to viscosity and light-scattering experiments.
