Description

This course is devoted to the critical analysis of architecture in Australia. It examines themes that situate developments in architecture in Australia from the early twentieth century to the present. These themes include: nationalism and how architects in Australia have responded to nationalistic ideas about culture and climate; the discourse around architecture and nature; the significance of travel for the importation of modernism; transparency in Australian architecture; concepts and practices of ‘regionalism’; symbolism and architecture; the media and legitimisation; issues relating to indigenous architecture, and the rise of the heritage conservation movement. These themes will be explored through academic scholarship and works of criticism.
