This is a specialized course that focuses on modern Philippine history by focusing on the themes that have sparked rigorous scholarly debates in the last twenty years. Topics discussed include: colonialism, gender, politics, migration and the diaspora, representations, identity and mentalities, popular culture and 'nation'. In addition, students have the opportunity to develop their own individual research projects in workshops conducted as part of the weekly two hour seminars and present this work orally in the form of mini conferences in the last weeks of term and a 5000 word research essay due at the end of semester.
