Description

The focus of this course is on the role of museums, art galleries and cultural centres in the display and representation of Indigenous peoples and their cultures. The course begins with a critical introduction to heritage of both pre-contact and contact Australia and its relationship to perpetuating myths through display. Disciplines of anthropology, ethnography, archaeology and museology are examined. Particular attention is given to material culture and the politics of display in museums and keeping places. Students undertake an excursion to a local museum and participate in interactive seminar discussion as part of this course.
