Description

The course will introduce you to the how of reading, writing, thinking and speaking, as well as give you an opportunity to apply what you learn to a particular topic. The topic will be Alice in Wonderland. Not only will we examine Lewis Carroll’s famous works: Alice’s adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, we will look at a selection of critical writings about these books, some recent movies and books that reference them, and a number of related themes, such as the function of fantasy and virtual reality. Weekly readings will be provided and you will also be expected to do your own outside reading.

The 3 hour class will begin with a one hour lecture focusing on the week’s topic followed by a two hour skills based seminar. This course will focus on:
  • the research/writing process
  • presentation skills
  • essay structure
  • the integration of and engagement with academic sources
  • critical thinking
  • academic writing style
This course will complement your work in other courses and enable you to be better prepared for your future academic work.
