This course introduces students to key aspects of Western architectural and design history, from Classical Antiquity to the mid 20th century. It will provide historical context to some of the theoretical issues discussed in INTA3121. Modernism, for example, will constitute one of the three major themes to be explored sequentially within a broad chronology, the first two themes being tradition and revival and design reform. Integral to the course and its assessment is the close study of interior environments, not only through lectures and tutorials, but also site visits. Through its tutorials and assessment tasks, the course is designed to assist students in developing essential skills in research, analysis, documentation and critical discussion.
