Description

Media Art in Asia is an elective course that explores contemporary media art practices and innovation in Asian visual cultures. The course will be of interest to students seeking to understand regional and global media art and its emergence in the countries of East, South and Southeast Asia. Through practice-based case studies of video art, photography, participatory art, installations and art cinema from Asia, the course will explore themes such as migration, diaspora, the influence of Asian pop and fantasy genres, war and memory, locality and place-making, cultural traffic and borderless media. Students will have the opportunity to respond to these themes via their artistic practice. Course assessment includes a creative practical component, such as a self-initiated artwork and/or curatorial project of peer work presented for peer discussion and class feedback.
