This course engages students with the theory and description of contemporary French popular culture, focusing particularly on the features of authentic cultural productions as the objects for study. Possible topics include songs, comic strips, cinematographic comedies, and current issues stimulating public debate in France. All the films, songs, books and texts have been carefully chosen to illustrate the same leading thread: how French popular culture evolved from the 1950s until present days. Each document will be studied in a different and specific way so as to highlight its inherent qualities, strengths or weaknesses, and in turn will be confronted to historical, semiotic and sociological analysis.
