Description

The aim of this course will be to introduce the significant area of Nanomedicine. Nanomedicine is already a large industry, and is rapidly expanding. As a broad example, nanomedicine relates to the delivery of pharmaceuticals by the application of functional nanomaterials, or the application (of the medicinal chemistry) of the nanomaterials themselves. This course will begin with an introduction to conventional medicinal chemistry, highlighting the chemical design and application of medicines and why new systems are constantly required. The application of nanomedicine in vitro (e.g. biosensors and diagnostic devices) and in vivo (e.g. drug delivery) will be covered. Finally, as medicinal activity is strongly correlated with toxicity, the potential toxicity of nanomaterials will be covered, including the types of evaluations that can be performed on new nanomaterials.
