Description

This course will introduce students to the theory, research and application regarding university student success from the perspective of psychological science. The focus will be on evaluating and applying theories and evidence-based strategies for behavioural change within a health psychology framework. The primary focus will be on the individual student within the university context. This course has the potential to equip students, preferably at the early stage of their university career, with a set of useful and generic coping and self-management skills. This transition course is best for first-year students who have taken less than 48 UOC, however others may benefit. This is not an easy course--every week each student is expected to undertake a significant amount of homework, in lieu of the usual one or two hours of lecture material. That is, this course is delivered in a flipped-classroom format, whereby all students are expected to come prepared (having completed homework exercises) to each face-to-face seminar, where there may be quizzes and other assessments. Most importantly, knowledge and skills are extended through highly interactive group-based activity. Lack of engagement is likely to lead to failure; full engagement has the potential to be highly rewarding.
