Description

GENY0001 runs in Semester 1. The aim of this fun course is to help you to improve your academic skills. Primarily it will provide guidance on how to present clear, well-structured arguments, how to better engage with and reference the ideas of others, how to think critically, and how to express yourself in an appropriately formal manner. The course will also help you to improve your presentation skills. Extensive feedback will be provided on your written work.

The course will give you an opportunity to apply what you learn to a particular topic. For GENY0001 the topic is Comedy Through the Ages. By examining theories about humour and examining humour in a range of historical contexts, including Western, Eastern and Indigenous contexts, you will gain a deeper understanding not only about what makes something funny, but about the functions of humour itself.

Weekly readings will be provided and you will also be expected to do your own outside reading. The 3 hour class will begin with a one hour lecture on the week’s ‘comedy’ topic followed by a two hour skills focused tutorial.
GENY0001 is not a prerequisite for GENY0002 or GENY0003. All three courses use similar academic skills material but have different themes.
