Description

GENY0002 runs in Semester 2. The aim of this fun course is to help you to improve your academic skills. Primarily it will provide guidance on how to present clear, well-structured arguments, how to better engage with and reference the ideas of others, how to think critically, and how to express yourself in an appropriately formal manner. The course will also help you to improve your presentation skills. Extensive feedback will be provided on your written work.

The course will give you an opportunity to apply what you learn to a particular topic. For GENY0002 the topic is Science Fiction. Throughout the semester you will be introduced to a number of famous science fiction books and movies, such as Gibson’s Neuromancer, Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four, District 9 and Lem’s Solaris. We will also discuss some of the key debates within the field of Science Fiction.

Weekly readings will be provided and you will also be expected to do your own outside reading. The 3 hour class will begin with a one hour lecture on the week’s Science Fiction topic followed by a two hour skills focused tutorial.

GENY0002 is not a prerequisite for GENY0001 or GENY0003. All three courses use similar academic skills material but have different themes.
