Description

This course focuses on the aspects of social stratification and gender relations in culturally-diverse Indonesia. Social stratification and its variations, derived mostly from cultural and religious norms, contribute to the way Indonesia’s politics and democracy is perceived and practiced both by the state and the population. The same also applies toward gender relations. Despite women’s participation in politics has been recently improved, for instance, the state holds a view that women should maintain their roles as loyal companions to their husbands, educators and guides for their children, and procreators for the nation. While globalisation-driven changes are inevitable, social hierarchy and imbalanced gender relations would remain part in acquiring an understanding of Indonesian society. The course will look to class and gender relations as they are exercised in the society, the extent they contribute to the governance and the state practice, and their representation in public through media.
