Stream Outline

Aims of the program
  • To develop informed understanding of human experience, human culture and human society in relation to German Studies.
  • To teach the tools and methods of understanding associated with German Studies, and to encourage students to perceive the relationship between German Studies and other Humanities and Social Science disciplines.
  • To encourage the breadth of vision and critical thinking associated with interdisciplinary scholarship and research related to German Studies.
  • To enable students to place contemporary German language, society and culture in a historical and comparative context.
  • To engage critically with fundamental questions about value in German Studies in both ethical and aesthetical contexts.
  • To develop the skills of critical, creative and imaginative thinking about German language, society, culture and the arts.
  • To promote the techniques and value of reasoned and open-minded discussion and debate.
  • To foster understanding of the experiences and world-views of other times, other places, and other cultures from a German perspective.

Stream Structure

For a major stream in German Studies students must complete 48 units of credit in German courses.

Note: A student who has achieved a higher level of study in a language course is not permitted to study a lower level language course.
