Program Description

The Arts/Medicine program is an alternative program of study in which, over a 7 or 8 year period, a student may complete the degree of Bachelor of Arts, together with the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. This program is only open to students who have been accepted for entry into the Faculty of Medicine.

In order to complete the combined program in 7 years, students are required to undertake an approved arts-focused Independent Learning Project as well as to complete an additional Arts course above the normal Semester load (24 UOC) in at least one Semester. All other students will require 8 years to complete the combined program.

Students who wish to undertake the program should contact the Faculty of Medicine Education and Student Office during Year 1 in order to apply to transfer from the Medicine 3802 program to Arts/Medicine 3845 at the end of year 1.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

The Arts/Medicine program is intended for those students who wish to continue their interest and studies in the Arts and Social Sciences during their medical studies.

Program Structure

Over a period of 7 or 8 years, students will be required to fulfil the requirements of the MB BS degree program as well as 96 units of credit in courses offered by the Schools/Departments/Programs within the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. This includes a home major stream of 54 UOC, a minor stream of at least 36 UOC and a prescribed Faculty Elective of 6 UOC.

Details of majors and minors available, and the Prescribed Faculty Elective, can be found on the 3403 Bachelor of Arts program page.

Honours

Students who have completed the combined Arts/Medicine program are eligible for the award of Honours in the MB BS degree program, based on the weighted mark for specified assessments in the three phases of the MB BS program, together with the marks obtained in the best 24 UOC undertaken in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. The Arts courses contribute approximately 10% towards the award of Honours.

For further details on Honours see the Online Handbook entry for Program 3802

Academic Rules

Students in the BA MB BS program will not be required to complete General Education courses or other courses outside the Faculty of Medicine. The requirements for the BA must be completed before commencing Phase 3 of the Medicine program. Upon rejoining the Medicine program, they will undertake a short clinical skills refresher course. Students wishing to undertake a full year of research in Arts will be able to enrol in a BA Honours program. Subject to the sequence of courses taken during Phase 2, these students may be exempt from undertaking the Independent Learning Project and could complete the combined program in approximately 8 years.

To qualify for the award of the BA degree at Pass level, a student must, in relation to courses in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences:
1. enrol in the Arts/Medicine Program and complete 96 units of credit;
2. complete the requirements for one home major stream
3. complete the requirements for one minor stream
4. complete a 6 UOC Faculty Prescribed Elective
