Program Description

The Dual degree program, Bachelor of Economics Bachelor of Education (BEc BEd) is a four-year program (192 UOC) for intending secondary school teachers. The program is a nationally accredited pre-service qualification.

Students combine studies in two single secondary teaching specialisations from the BEc. The program covers both theoretical and practical aspects of education, including 80 days supervised professional experience in at least two different secondary schools.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

On successful completion of the BEc, students will have the ability to:
  1. demonstrate understanding and application of economic concepts and processes
  2. demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills
  3. understand, analyse and use quantitative data to assist in making economic and business decisions
  4. present complex issues in coherent written statements and oral presentations
  5. demonstrate understanding of the global economic context in which business and governments operate
  6. understand the social and ethical dimensions in their chosen disciplinary areas.
The aim of the UNSW BEd is to prepare its graduates for careers as secondary school teachers. It seeks to do this by providing instruction and experience in the areas of educational theory, pedagogy, planning, diversity and management.


The Graduate Attributes for the UNSW BEd are as follows:

  1. A high level of knowledge and skill dealing with the needs of a range of students and how they learn.
  2. A high level of knowledge of specific subject content and how to teach that content to a diverse range of students.
  3. An ability to integrate theory and practice through the critical analysis and exploration of a diverse range of educational issues.
  4. A capacity to create and maintain safe and challenging learning environment through the effective use of a variety of appropriate classroom management skills.
  5. An ability to plan, assess, and report for effective learning.
  6. An ability to critically reflect upon and continually improve professional knowledge and practice.
  7. A capacity to actively and collaboratively engage with members of the education profession and with the wider community.
  8. An ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of students and other stakeholders through a variety of modes, including verbal, written and multimodal/ICT.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Education in Dual Mode

Program Structure

The basic requirements for the degree in Dual mode (96 uoc) are:
  1. Education Core (60 UOC)
  2. Prescribed Education method electives (24 UOC)
  3. Prescribed Education electives (12 UOC)

Prescribed Education Methods

Students complete two courses in each single teaching specialisation from the following:
  • Business Studies
  • Economics
The teaching specialisation requirements are summarised below:
 
Teaching Specialisation (offered as a single method)
Two single methods: A Major stream is required for the first teaching method, and a Minor stream for the second teaching method.
Business Studies
Business-related studies, with a Major or Minor stream in business law (Australian/ English) , economics, human resource management , industrial relations, marketing, finance, accounting , or business management. In addition, students must complete: (a) 6 UOC in Accounting or Finance, AND (b) 6 UOC in Business Management (the courses in Accounting, Finance and Business Management may be first year courses).
Economics
Major or Minor stream in Economics   

Prescribed Education Electives

English Proficiency

Proficiency in English is essential in all Education courses. It is expected that all applicants will have a Higher School Certificate minimum Band 4 in Standard English, English as a Second Language or Advanced English, or an overall IELTS score of 7.5, with a minimum of 8.0 in Speaking and Listening and a minimum of 7.0 in Reading and Writing, or the equivalent.

Award with Distinction

High achieving students who secure a WAM of 75 across their program and who have completed at least 48UOC of their program at UNSW are eligible for the award of their Pass Degree "with Distinction".

Honours

High achieving BEd students may apply for entry to Honours. Honours is an additional year of study (two years part-time) which allows a student to further explore the field of Education. It involves seminars and the completion of a thesis. Those students who are considering Honours should submit an expression of interest at the beginning of Level 4 and complete a formal application at the end of Level 4. Both should be submitted to the School of Education Honours Convenor. Entry to Honours requires a WAM of 70 or higher in the program and is subject to resources and the approval of the Head of School Education. Honours is awarded in three classes (Class 1, Class 2 in two Divisions, and Class 3). If requirements for these classes are not met the Pass degree will be awarded if the student is not already a Graduate of the program.

Eligible students may commence the relevant Honours program only when they have completed the requirements for the equivalent of a single degree for that program (i.e. where an Education student in a dual program would like to commence Honours they must have completed at least the 96 UOC Education core degree plus 48 units of credit for the Economics degree such that a total of 144 UOC has been completed).

Academic Rules

To qualify for the award of the degree at Pass level, a student must:
  1. enrol in the Bachelor of Education in Dual mode and complete 96 units of credit;
  2. complete the method requirements for one or two areas of teaching specialisation
  3. complete at least 30 UOC of Level I courses before enrolling in Level II courses
  4. complete at least 30 UOC of Level II courses before enrolling in Level III courses

Honours

To qualify for the award of the degree with Honours, a Dual award student must:
  1. be a Graduand or Graduate of the Bachelor of Education
  2. hold a WAM of 70 or higher in those streams they are seeking to further study
  3. complete the List A and List B seminar coursework requirement for their area of study (18 UOC)
  4. complete a research project or thesis (30 UOC)
Requirements for the Bachelor of Economics in Dual Mode

Taken in Dual mode with another program, the BEc requires 96UOC, requiring:

  • 84 UOC of Economics courses, consisting of:
          -   Compulsory first year and second year core courses
          -   Major requirements
          -   Free options of courses offered by the School of Economics
  • 12 UOC of free electives
Compulsory first and second year core courses account for 48 UOC (8 courses)
Major requirements: Students must complete at least one major in Economics, Econometrics or Financial Economics consisting of 60UOC. The 60UOC includes 36UOC from the compulsory first and second year core courses. (ACCT1501 and ECON1401 do not count towards a major.) Students must complete at least three (3) level 3 courses (numbered 3XXX).

Free Electives account for the balance of the degree requirements. These courses may be taken from those offered by the Australian School of Business or other Faculties within UNSW.

Note: If a student is completing the BEc/BEd, MGMT1001 Managing Organisations and People, must be taken as one of these Free Electives.

Honours: Students interested in studying at Honours Level should refer to the relevant Honours plan record for entry requirements.


Academic Rules - Dual Mode

Content of Program


To be awarded a degree at Pass Level, the BEc (Dual mode) must contain:

  1. 96 units of credit (UOC).
  2. A minimum of 84Uoc of courses offered by the School of Economics. The Qualifying List of Economics Courses includes courses from other Faculties specified as accepted substitutes for Economics courses (e.g. MATH1031 for ECON1202) and some specified non-Economic courses offered by the School of Accounting in the ASB, specifically ACCT1501 (part of BEc core), ACCT3563/ACCT3573 (Hons) and ACCT3583/ACCT3593 (Hons).
  3. 48UOC of core courses (36UOC of Level 1 Core courses and 12UOC of Level 2 Core courses).
  4. One Major from within Economics
  5. Maximum of 60UoC of Level 1 courses.
Majors
  1. An Economics Major is a sequence of 60UOC courses in a single discipline or area of study.
  2. 18UOC of a Major must be at Level 3.
  3. If a student chooses to complete a second major, and the Majors have courses in common outside the core courses, the common courses can only be counted towards one major.
Progression Rules
  1. A minimum of 24UOC of Level 1 courses must be completed before enrolling in Level 2 courses.
  2. A minimum of 48UOC of courses (Level 1 and 2) must be completed before enrolling in Level 3 courses
  3. Students must declare their major before commencing Level 2.
Awarding degree
  1. A Pass degree with Distinction may be awarded if a student achieves a minimum of 75 WAM across the program and completes a minimum of 72UOC at UNSW.
Honours
  • Additional year of 48UOC in one approved disciplinary stream, after completion of the requirements of the pass degree.
  • Comprises specified courses (24UOC) from the relevant disciplinary stream plus a thesis (24UOC).
  • Must be completed in two semesters following completion of the pass degree component.
         Eligibility:
  • Minimum WAM of 70 in the relevant disciplinary stream of the Pass degree component. However please consult the relevant School as some Schools require a higher academic performance;
  • Pass all courses in the Pass degree component at the first attempt.
  • Application: expression of interest and written application submitted to the Head of School or Honours Coordinator in the relevant School.
  • Award: Class 1, Class II Division 1, Class II Division II, Class III; if requirements for these classes are not met, a Pass degree will be awarded.

The online enrolment facility checks that students meet the enrolment requirements for individual courses but not that a course complies with Program Rules. Students are responsible for ensuring they are enrolling in accordance with the Academic Rules outlined above.
