Program Description

The University Preparation Program (UPP) is an enabling program for adults aged 21 and over who either do not possess formal qualifications or whose academic qualifications do not satisfy the minimum entry requirements for admission to university study. The program has been designed to assess students' academic potential and to provide a realistic environment within which the skills to manage tertiary study can be developed effectively.

Satisfactory completion of the UPP does not guarantee admission to any specific program, but can be used as evidence of recent study when applying for admission to the University. A student's total educational background, and not just their UPP results will be taken into consideration for admission purposes.

Applications for UPP places, which number approximately 350 each year, open in early December.

Program Objectives and Graduate Attributes

At the end of the program, students should have acquired all of the following graduate attributes:
  • The capacity to engage in scholarly enquiry
  • The ability to engage in independent and reflective learning
  • The capacity for anaytical and critical thinking and for creative problem solving
  • The skills of effective communication.

Program Structure

The program offers three streams, preparing students for university study in Humanities, Science or Engineering. The requirements for each stream are different. Students' eligiblity for admission to a University award program is assessed on completion of the course requirements for the relevant stream.

Students undertaking the University Preparation Program choose one of the following streams depending on their intended area of undergraduate study:

Humanities stream - Suitable for programs in Arts & Social Sciences, Built Environment, COFA, Law. Offered over 2 semesters.

Science stream - Suitable for programs in Science and Mathematics. Offered over 2 semesters.

Engineering stream- Suitable for programs in Engineering. Offered over 3 semesters.

Depending on which stream students choose, the UPP involves students completing core and elective components of study.

More information regarding the components offered under each of these streams can be obtained here.
